Kudos to Comis – From Pigs to Plants
“After ten years of looking into thousands of pig eyes, I’ve come to understand they are never vacant. There’s always somebody looking back at me.” ~Bob Comis
Bob Comis found success in his decade of humane pig farming. While the work made a comfortable financial living, Comis’ direct experience led him to question the livelihood. Observing firsthand that pigs are highly sociable and as intelligent as dogs, Comis’s couldn’t ignore the acute suffering and emotional distress of the pigs when separated from each other. Eventually reckoning with what Comis termed “the last pig problem,” he recently sent the last pigs on his farm to sanctuaries instead of slaughter.
Comis repurposed his land for vegetables and put his considerable experience and passion for farming to use by establishing In Line Farm. He didn’t stop there. In Line Farm goes beyond organic and grows veganic vegetables, using none of the animal-based compost (manure, slaughterhouse byproducts like feather, bone, and blood meal) that are allowed by organic standards. In Line is one of only four veganic farms in New York state, and sources a range of fresh produce direct to wholesalers. Learn more about In Line Farm’s vision, values, and goals , for an insightful model to envision this bold and compassionate transition from livestock to vegetable farming.
Read more about Comis’ life changing decision or wait for the upcoming documentary film, The Last Pig, which shares Comis’ compelling experience as a small scale livestock farmer and subsequent transition to veganic farming. The film release is anticipated in summer 2016.
