Tricks and Treats: Companion Animal Safety
Whether you’re passing out candy or taking your dog out with the kids on a trick or treating adventure, here are five quick tips to help keep your furry family members safe this Halloween.
1. Knock Knock. Who’s There? — If you’re passing out candy, consider keeping cats, dogs and other companion animals separate from the heavy traffic. In addition to the stress of knocking and doorbells, the steady flow of strangers in weird costumes can be unnerving for animals. Not to mention, that wide open front door can look like an invitation, especially if your pal is already a little nervous about all the activity.
2. Prevent Free Range Grazing — whether at home or on the trick or treat path, keep an eye on the pooch to make sure no sweets are ingested. Keep candies and wrappers in a secure place: out of reach and out of sight. Chocolate is dangerous for dogs and other human treats may have potentially harmful ingredients too. Don’t delay: contact your veterinarian or a pet poison control center if you think your furry friend may have ingested a harmful substance.
3. To Dress or Not to Dress? — if you’re the type who dresses up the family dog or cat (we know you’re out there), first, ask yourself who’s having fun? If dress-up-time is a stressful mess for your pooch, please think twice before putting Fido into that tutu.
4. Be Bootiful — If you choose to include your furry friend in the costume hour, keep it comfy. No matter how adorable you think the outfit is, be practical. Be sure to avoid any costume that could pose potential problems for vision, mobility, or comfort. Always check for wear and tear and never leave your pal unattended when dressed up.
5. ID check – make sure all ID tags are secure and current before the big night.
