October 16: National Feral Cat Day
Me-WOW! October 16, 2015 is the 15th annual National Feral Cat Day.
Feral cats are unsocialized domestic cats that live outside, though sometimes groups of feral cats may include semi-socialized or lost house cats. Feral cats are found in communities all over the U.S. Unlike socialized cats, adult feral cats are not usually suitable for adoption because they cannot be handled, though the kittens of feral cats can be socialized if handled at a young age. Though anti-cruelty laws in all 50 states protect all cats and prohibit intentionally killing a cat, feral cats are still misunderstood and often subject to harm.
Responding to decades of abuse to feral cats, Alley Cat Allies is a national leader in advocacy, education, and care for feral cats, and the organization has developed informative and useful tools to mark October 16 as National Feral Cat Day. A number of studies establish the proven effectiveness of Trap Neuter Return (TNR) programs. By promoting understanding and awareness about humane TNR programs, National Feral Cat Day is good for feral cat colonies and their human neighbors.
From understanding the benefits of TNR to tools for organizations seeking to implement TNR programs, Alley Cat Allies offers in depth, useful, and engaging resources for National Feral Cat Day and every day activism. This October 16, find activities and events near you, explore social media tools, and get involved. For even more information, check out Alley Cat Allies’ Evolution of the Cat Revolution webinar.
If you’ve ever wondered what you can do to make a difference in the lives of feral cats, Alley Cat Allies probably has the answers to your questions, and the resources to help you improve the lives of local feral cats.
