Candles, sparkles, bulbs, twinkling lights, ribbons, bows!

More than 50% of folks in the U.S. buy holiday gifts for animals, but often seasonal decorations seem to grab the attention of companion animals attention faster than a new toy.  If you’re celebrations include one or more festive embellishments, a little extra attention can make it safer for the four-legged members of your household.

Make sure potential hazards are untouchable

• keep candles on inaccessible shelves (and never leave lit flames unattended)
• block access to houseplants and trees to prevent chewing or ingesting
• if you decorate with a live tree, do not let animals ingest this water
• if you decorate with any tree, secure it carefully to prevent knock-down incidents
• keep electrical cords out of reach
• use tinsel, ribbons, strings, and other tempting potential hazards sparingly
• keep candy, treats, and other edible goodies stored in safe, inaccessible location
• take note of your local veterinarian’s holiday schedule
• keep an animal poison control hotline number handy in case of emergencies
• review potential safety concerns with your veterinarian and ask for recommended tips
• share the love –  don’t leave your forever friends out in the cold.  Bring them inside!

If you’re hosting guests, consider what they should know in advance.  A few quick reminders will help make everyone’s stay enjoyable!

• talk to guests, including children about companion animal safety
• be clear about the rules and expectations (greetings and behaviors; potential hazards; treats, scraps, and feeding; safety issues like keeping doors closed, using leashes, access to fenced areas, etc.)
• keep your companion animals’ routines are as regular as possible
• provide a cozy hiding spot with all the necessities (water, bed, etc.) so your companion animals have a place to retreat to if they aren’t feeling as sociable as you are
