October: Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
While homeless animals are vulnerable all year, an awareness raising month facilitates greater understanding of the needs of the millions of animals who need a second chance and provides a special time to highlight the realities (and benefits) of adopting shelter dogs. The folks at CLAWTheory are thrilled to share the reasons we think adoption makes for top dogs.
There is a new reason every 13 seconds
- Just about every 13 seconds across the U.S. a dog or cat is euthanized
- No time for a puppy? Prefer a senior dog? Adopting from a shelter can help you meet the age-specific needs of your household
- Be a part of the solution: adopt and join the NK (no kill) movement!
- What kind of dog will you find? Whatever kind of dog you look for!
- 25% dogs in shelters are purebred
- 100% of adoptable shelter dogs are adorable in their own ways

Whether you are adopting your first or fourth shelter dog, consider what may help you prepare for the new addition to your family before bringing your new best friend home. Consider the kind of dog appropriate to your lifestyle, any schedule accommodations you may need to make.
Even if you are unable to adopt a shelter dog, there are lots of ways to support the efforts of local animal shelters!
- Promote awareness- share news of the month on social media for national and local animal shelters!
- Donate time, needed wish list items, or money to support local shelters
